Decision Questions

Should I take the bus or the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Osaka?

If budget is the priority: highway bus saves ¥9,000+ vs the Shinkansen. The trade-off is 6–8 hours vs 3 hours, plus less predictability on highway delays.

If this is your only major route (no JR Pass): the Shinkansen Hikari at ¥13,870 is the best total-value option. It arrives city-center, runs on time to the minute, and gives you 5+ extra hours in Osaka. For most travelers, those recovered hours are worth more than ¥9,000.

Is the JR Pass worth buying for a Tokyo–Osaka round trip?

No. A Tokyo–Osaka–Tokyo round trip on the Hikari costs ¥27,740. The cheapest JR Pass is the 7-day at ¥50,000 — that's ¥22,260 more than buying individual Hikari tickets for the round trip.

Exception: If your trip extends to Hiroshima (adds ~¥9,440 each way) or Fukuoka (adds ~¥14,400 each way), the pass math improves significantly. Use the JR Pass calculator to check your exact itinerary.

Is it faster to fly from Tokyo to Osaka than take the Shinkansen?

Door-to-door, the Shinkansen is usually faster. A flight from Haneda to Itami is 70 minutes in the air, but adding airport check-in (60 min early), transfer time from central Tokyo to Haneda (30 min), and transfer from Itami to central Osaka (30 min) makes the real journey 3.5–4.5 hours. The Nozomi Shinkansen from Tokyo Station to Shin-Osaka takes 2h25m with no airport overhead. Shin-Osaka connects directly to central Osaka via Osaka Metro in 5 minutes.
