JR Pass Break-Even Reference
| Pass | Price | You need this much in tickets |
|---|---|---|
| 7-day | ¥50,000 | e.g. Tokyo→Kyoto→Hiroshima→Osaka round trip (≈¥50,000) |
| 14-day | ¥80,000 | e.g. 7-day itinerary + Kyushu or Tohoku extension |
| 21-day | ¥100,000 | e.g. Full Japan traverse or multiple island-hopping |
Prices are ordinary adult 2024 rates purchased outside Japan. Individual tickets are Hikari shinkansen (JR Pass-eligible) prices.
How the JR Pass Calculator Works
This calculator compares the total cost of buying individual shinkansen and JR train tickets for each leg of your trip against the flat price of a 7, 14, or 21-day JR Pass.
The JR Pass covers all JR-operated shinkansen (Hikari, Sakura, Kodama — but not Nozomi or Mizuho), JR local trains, the Narita Express N'EX, and JR buses. It does not cover private railways, Tokyo Metro, or the Keisei Skyliner.
Ticket prices in this calculator are the standard ordinary-class adult fares for the fastest JR Pass-eligible service on each route. Round-trip routes are counted as two tickets.
What the JR Pass Does Not Cover
- Nozomi and Mizuho shinkansen (fastest Tokyo–Osaka services)
- Tokyo Metro and Toei Subway — use Suica or a Tokyo Subway Ticket
- Keisei Skyliner from Narita (the N'EX is covered)
- Private railways (Kintetsu, Hankyu, Keio, etc.)
- Non-JR buses and taxis
When the JR Pass Is Worth It
The JR Pass makes financial sense for trips that involve multiple long-distance shinkansen journeys. The most common worthwhile itineraries:
| Itinerary | Individual tickets | 7-day Pass | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tokyo → Kyoto → Osaka → Tokyo | ~¥41,610 | ¥50,000 | Not worth it |
| Tokyo → Kyoto → Hiroshima → Osaka → Tokyo | ~¥55,910 | ¥50,000 | Worth it — saves ¥5,910 |
| Tokyo → Kyoto → Osaka → Hakata → Tokyo | ~¥65,610 | ¥50,000 | Worth it — saves ¥15,610 |
| Tokyo → Kyoto → Osaka + N'EX round trip | ~¥47,750 | ¥50,000 | Break-even |
| Tokyo → Sendai → Tokyo + N'EX round trip | ~¥28,920 | ¥50,000 | Not worth it |
Individual ticket costs are Hikari ordinary adult one-way fares. Use the calculator above for your exact itinerary.
When the JR Pass Is NOT Worth It
- Staying in Tokyo only — the JR Pass has almost no value inside Tokyo vs a Suica card
- Tokyo to Kyoto and back only — round-trip costs ~¥27,740, far below ¥50,000
- Short day trips from Tokyo — Nikko, Kamakura, Yokohama are cheap on individual tickets
- Flying between Osaka and Hokkaido — budget flights are usually cheaper than the shinkansen
- Using Nozomi trains — the fastest Tokyo–Osaka shinkansen are not JR Pass eligible
Decision Summary
Use the JR Pass if: your individual JR train tickets for your itinerary total more than ¥50,000 (7-day), ¥80,000 (14-day), or ¥100,000 (21-day). The calculator above will tell you exactly.
Skip the JR Pass if: you are staying in one or two cities, doing only a Tokyo–Kyoto round trip, or your total shinkansen spend is well below the pass price. Buy individual tickets via Suica or at the JR ticket machine.
Also consider: convenience. The JR Pass means no queuing for tickets at each station and no carrying loose fare. For 7+ city itineraries this alone may be worth ¥2,000–3,000 in saved time and stress.
JR Pass Calculator — Frequently Asked Questions
How accurate is this JR Pass calculator?
This calculator uses the standard JR ordinary adult fares for Hikari shinkansen services — the fastest trains the JR Pass covers. Prices are updated to 2024 rates. Actual fares vary slightly by seat type and reservation fees. The calculator gives a reliable comparison for planning purposes; confirm current fares at jr-pass-worth-it or at JR ticket offices.
Does the JR Pass price include the N'EX from Narita?
Yes — tick the Narita N'EX option in the calculator. The N'EX round-trip costs ¥6,140 in individual tickets. If you hold a JR Pass this is covered, so the ¥6,140 counts toward your pass value. Many travelers find this single addition tips the 7-day pass into "worth it" territory.
Can I use the JR Pass on the Nozomi shinkansen?
No. The Nozomi and Mizuho are the fastest Tokyo–Osaka–Fukuoka services and are not covered by the JR Pass. Pass holders must use the Hikari (about 15 min slower Tokyo–Kyoto) or Sakura/Kodama on the Sanyo Shinkansen. This is an important limitation for tight itineraries.
Where do I buy the JR Pass?
Purchase online before departure through the official JR Pass website or authorized travel agencies. Buying in Japan is now possible but costs more than the overseas rate. Always buy before you fly for the best price.
Is there a JR Pass for just Tokyo to Kyoto?
There is no partial JR Pass. The cheapest full pass is ¥50,000 for 7 days. A Tokyo–Kyoto round trip costs ~¥27,740 in individual tickets — making the full JR Pass poor value for this route alone. However, if you also travel to Hiroshima or Hakata, the 7-day pass quickly becomes worthwhile. See our full JR Pass worth-it analysis →
