Compare the Kanazawa route with the Japan Rail Pass
Adding Kanazawa does not automatically make the pass worthwhile. Compare the Tokyo–Kanazawa Hokuriku journey, the Tsuruga transfer toward Kyoto or Osaka, the return to Tokyo and any extra tickets inside one consecutive pass window.
Build the route in the order you will travel
The same four cities can produce different ticket totals and pass windows when the order changes.
Tokyo to Kanazawa
The Hokuriku Shinkansen is a covered JR journey within the pass validity period. Use the exact train and seat type when checking the individual fare.
Kanazawa to Kyoto or Osaka
The current JR route uses the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Tsuruga, followed by a limited express connection. Count the complete journey rather than an outdated direct-train assumption.
Kyoto or Osaka back to Tokyo
Add the exact Tokaido Shinkansen service you plan to use. A Nozomi journey requires an extra ticket for Japan Rail Pass holders.
At Tsuruga
Change trains before continuing to Kyoto or Osaka
The current JR route uses the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Tsuruga, followed by a limited express connection.
Keep the pass days consecutive
All journeys the pass replaces must stay inside the selected 7, 14 or 21-day period.
Add a Nozomi or Mizuho ticket
The pass alone does not cover these services; buy the official additional ticket or use a covered train.
Keep non-JR sections separate
Private railways and local transport remain separate unless the official coverage states otherwise.
