Haruka, limousine bus or Nankai from Kansai Airport?

By Echoes, Founder & Editor · Published October 23, 2026 · Updated October 28, 2026

Short answer

Pick the stop that is actually near the hotel. Kyoto Station: a visitor HARUKA one-way ticket sold through October 31, 2026 is ¥2,200 adult; a ticket sold from November 1, 2026 is ¥2,700 adult. JR West sets that sale price by the date of purchase, not the date of exchange or use. The limousine bus is ¥2,800. Osaka or Shin-Osaka: adult HARUKA is ¥1,800 for tickets sold through October 31, 2026, and ¥1,900 for tickets sold from November 1, 2026. Namba: take Nankai. The Rapi:t digital ticket is ¥1,410. Do not buy a ¥50,000 JR Pass for this one ride.

HARUKA sale prices rechecked October 28, 2026 on JR West. Bus and Nankai figures checked October 23, 2026. Adult one-way prices unless a child fare is named. Haruka minutes and the ordinary non-discount Haruka fare are needs-verify.
November trip, October purchase

If you qualify for the visitor ticket and you are riding in November, you may still pay the older Kyoto adult price of ¥2,200 by buying on or before October 31, 2026. JR-WEST ONLINE TRAIN RESERVATION opens from one month before boarding, starting at 10:00 a.m. JST on the same calendar day of the previous month, so the ride has to fall inside that window. Tickets sold from November 1, 2026 use the new price: Kyoto adult ¥2,700 (child ¥1,350). The same purchase dates apply to the other visitor fares on this page. Tickets sold through October 31, 2026: Osaka or Shin-Osaka adult ¥1,800 (child ¥900), Tennoji adult ¥1,300 (child ¥650). Tickets sold from November 1, 2026: Osaka or Shin-Osaka adult ¥1,900 (child ¥950), Tennoji adult ¥1,600 (child ¥800). JR West says product sales prices are set by the date of purchase, not the date you exchange the ticket or the date you ride.

These HARUKA prices are the visitor one-way ticket, not the ordinary reserved fare. JR West says product sales prices are set by the date of purchase, not the date of exchange or use. You need a passport issued by a government other than Japan and “Temporary Visitor” status. JR West says you cannot hold more than one of the same ticket for the same use period, and the ticket becomes invalid if you get off at an intermediate station. The ordinary non-discount Haruka fare, for someone who does not qualify, is needs-verify on the JR West fare table before you compare it.

HARUKA minutes from Kansai Airport to Kyoto, Osaka and Shin-Osaka are needs-verify against the day’s timetable. Do not plan a connection on a blog’s “about 75 minutes.”

What the Haruka ticket does not include

  • It is not a Shinkansen ticket. The WEST QR version cannot be used on the Tokaido Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Kyoto, or on limited expresses other than HARUKA. Kyoto on this ticket means the HARUKA into Kyoto Station.
  • Green Car is extra. JR West’s accommodation table says a Green Car needs a separate first-class ticket and express ticket.
  • A full reserved car does not become a free seat in another car. If the dedicated HARUKA car is full, you can use a non-reserved seat. You cannot move into a reserved seat in another car, and there is no refund of the difference.
  • The last mile is separate. Kyoto Station to a Gion hotel, or Namba to a subway stop, is another fare. An IC card pays that hop. See ICOCA vs Suica and the IC card guide. JR West sells a visitor-design ICOCA at the Kansai Airport Station ticket office for ¥2,000, including a ¥500 deposit.
  • Osaka to Kyoto the next day is a different ride. Use the Osaka–Kyoto guide. Do not stay on an airport ticket for that.

Nankai, if the hotel is Namba

Limited Express Rapi:t connects Kansai Airport and Nankai Namba in as little as 34 minutes. Airport Express takes about 45 minutes and needs only an ordinary ticket. The limited-express charge by itself is ¥700 for a regular seat and ¥910 for a super seat (child ¥350 and ¥560). Buying that limited-express ticket on board adds ¥300. The digital ticket above already includes the base fare and the seat for the stations Nankai lists, including Namba, Shin-Imamiya, Tengachaya, Sakai and Sumiyoshitaisha. Rapi:t α skips some of those stops. You choose the train and seat after purchase, up to five minutes before departure.

Umeda is not the end of the Rapi:t. Budget another local ride from Namba. That onward fare is needs-verify for your exact station. The JR Kansai Airport Rapid, which is not the HARUKA, is also needs-verify for both fare and minutes. It is the fallback when you do not want the visitor HARUKA ticket and you are staying on JR.

When a pass changes the answer

A nationwide JR Pass covers HARUKA while it is valid, because HARUKA is a JR limited express and it is not a Nozomi or Mizuho. It does not cover Nankai or the airport limousine. One visitor HARUKA ticket to Kyoto is ¥2,200 if sold through October 31, 2026, or ¥2,700 if sold from November 1. A 7-day ordinary JR Pass is ¥50,000 online. Start the national pass on this airport day only if the same calendar day also includes a long covered ride, such as continuing to Tokyo. Otherwise set a later start date. See when to activate a JR Pass.

The JR West Kansai Area Pass is not a current purchase. JR West says sales ended on September 30, 2026. A pass bought by that date stays valid for its own period and can still cover HARUKA: non-reserved ordinary seats, and ordinary reserved seats within the pass limit (the WEST QR page says twice). It does not cover other limited expresses, the Shinkansen, or expressway buses. If you do not already hold one, compare the visitor HARUKA ticket with the bus or Nankai. The older TripWorth page Is the Kansai Area Pass worth it? and Kansai pass vs JR Pass predate that sales end. Use them for coverage questions, not as a live price list.

Flying into Kansai and out of Tokyo later is a separate rail decision. Price that leg on the Tokyo–Osaka guide, not on the airport ticket. For other airports, start at Japan airport transfers.

FAQ

Common questions

Is the Haruka or the bus cheaper to Kyoto?

The visitor HARUKA one-way ticket to Kyoto is ¥2,200 for tickets sold through October 31, 2026, and ¥2,700 for tickets sold from November 1, 2026. JR West sets the sale price by the date of purchase, not the date of exchange or use. The airport limousine bus is ¥2,800 one way and about 1 hour 25 to 30 minutes. The ordinary non-discount Haruka fare is needs-verify.

Should I take the Haruka to Namba?

No. HARUKA serves Tennoji, Osaka, Shin-Osaka and Kyoto. Namba is a Nankai station. The Rapi:t digital ticket, including the limited-express seat, is ¥1,410 for a regular seat.

Does a JR Pass or Kansai Area Pass cover the Haruka?

A valid nationwide JR Pass covers the Haruka. Kansai Area Pass sales ended on September 30, 2026; a pass already purchased can still cover Haruka under its own seat rules. Neither pass covers Nankai or the airport limousine bus. A new ¥50,000 JR Pass is a poor way to pay for one airport ride.

Can I get off the Haruka one-way ticket early?

No. JR West says the discounted one-way ticket becomes invalid if you get off at an intermediate station.

Does the Haruka ticket include the Shinkansen from Shin-Osaka to Kyoto?

No. The WEST QR Haruka ticket cannot be used on the Tokaido Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Kyoto, or on limited expresses other than the Haruka.
