When should you start a JR Pass?

By Echoes, Founder & Editor · Published October 23, 2026

Short answer

Set the start date to the first calendar day you ride a long covered JR train, not the day you land. Picking up the pass at Narita or Haneda is not the same as starting it. A 7-day ordinary pass is ¥50,000 online. A Narita Express to Tokyo Station is ¥3,140. Once the pass is issued, JR says the period of use cannot be changed.

Pickup day and start date are different

What the official rules actually fix
StepWhat JR saysWhat travelers get wrong
Exchange OrderNot valid on a train. Exchange it at a JR Pass exchange office within 3 months of issue, and from one month before the date of use.Treating the airport exchange as “activation today.”
Official online purchasePick up before the start date or during the valid period. Seat reservations can be made on the same site before you land.Assuming the pass starts when the QR or passport is scanned at immigration.
After the pass is issuedThe period of use cannot be changed. The pass can be used only inside that period.Planning to “start the clock” on the first Shinkansen after a few Tokyo days.
Length7, 14 or 21 consecutive days. You cannot pause a day in the middle.Counting 7 travel days spread across a 10-day trip.

JR’s own example: if the date of use is May 30, the Exchange Order can be exchanged from April 30. An order issued on April 15 must be exchanged by July 14. The exact minute the period begins and ends on the first and last calendar day is needs-verify on the current English conditions page. If you have a departure close to midnight, ask the clerk before you lock the date.

Why an airport start date wastes a day

One calendar day of a 7-day pass versus the ride you actually take
Ride on the arrival daySeparate ticketAgainst a ¥50,000 7-day pass
Narita Express to Tokyo Station¥3,140Covered only if the pass is already valid. One seventh of ¥50,000 is about ¥7,100. The airport train does not fill that.
Narita Express to Shinjuku, Shibuya or Shinagawa¥3,330Same problem. See Narita Express prices.
Keisei SkylinerNot a JR trainNot covered. Starting the pass does not pay for it. Compare N’EX and Skyliner.
Tokyo → Kyoto, Hikari reserved, regular season¥13,850This is a start-date day. One way Tokyo → Kyoto → Osaka is ¥15,300 in the Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka fare table.

Haneda has the same trap. The airport ride into Tokyo is cheap next to a pass day. Use the Haneda transfer guide for the hotel leg, and keep the pass for the Shinkansen window.

A straight-to-Kyoto landing is the exception. If you clear the airport and board a covered Hikari or Kodama the same calendar day, that day belongs inside the pass. Nozomi and Mizuho are not included; the extra ticket is separate. See which Shinkansen the pass covers.

How to place the 7, 14 or 21 days

  • List the long JR days first. Tokyo–Kyoto, Kyoto–Hiroshima, Hiroshima–Hakata and the return are the rides that move the total. Local Tokyo days and an Osaka–Kyoto Special Rapid do not.
  • Put those long rides inside consecutive days. A 7-day pass is ¥50,000 online (¥53,000 from an overseas agency). A 14-day pass is ¥80,000 online. A 21-day pass is ¥100,000 online. Compare your own list in the JR Pass calculator, then read 7-day, 14-day and 21-day.
  • Buy the pass only if the covered tickets inside that window beat the pass price. The classic Tokyo → Kyoto → Osaka → Tokyo loop is ¥29,700 in individual Hikari reserved tickets, against ¥50,000. See is the JR Pass worth it.
  • Reserve the Shinkansen seats for the start date before you travel if you bought online. Agency Exchange Orders are reserved after you exchange them. See where to book seats.

Worked shape, not a fare quote: three Tokyo nights, then Kyoto, Osaka and a return that all sit inside seven days of the Kyoto departure. Start the pass on the Kyoto morning. Pay for Narita or Haneda, and for Tokyo local rides, outside the pass. If the return to Tokyo falls on day 8, either move the return earlier, drop the pass, or check whether a 14-day pass is the one that actually contains both Shinkansen days. Do not “add a day” to a 7-day pass. JR does not sell that.

If the date is already wrong

An issued pass cannot have its period changed. A refund is, in principle, only available before the starting date, and any reserved-seat tickets already issued have to be cancelled first. For an online purchase that has not been picked up, JR says a refund is available until 11:30 p.m. Japan time on the day before the start date. The handling fee is ¥560 per pass. Whether the reservation site will move an unissued start date without that refund is needs-verify.

An Exchange Order refund goes through the overseas seller, not through a Japanese station, and the seller’s fee is the seller’s rule. After you have exchanged it, a refund of the pass at a Japanese exchange office takes a 10% handling fee of the yen price. Confirm the current rule at the counter before you hand the order over.

FAQ

Common questions

Should I activate my JR Pass at Narita or Haneda?

Only if that calendar day includes a long covered JR ride, such as continuing straight to Kyoto. Exchanging an Exchange Order or picking up an online pass at the airport does not have to make today the start date. A Narita Express to Tokyo Station is ¥3,140, far less than one day of a ¥50,000 7-day pass.

Can I choose a start date after I arrive?

Yes. An Exchange Order can be exchanged from one month before the date of use, and it must be exchanged within three months of the issue date. An online pass is picked up before the start date or during the valid period. After the pass is issued, the period of use cannot be changed.

Does the pass start when I first tap a ticket gate?

No. Current JR rules use a starting date for the period of use. The pass runs for 7, 14 or 21 consecutive days in that period. It is not a 24-hour timer that starts at the airport gate.

Is the Narita Express or Skyliner covered?

Narita Express is a JR train and is covered while the pass is valid. Keisei Skyliner is not covered. Neither ride, by itself, is a reason to start a ¥50,000 pass.

Can I change the start date after the pass is issued?

No. Official conditions say the period of use of an issued pass cannot be changed. An online pass that has not been issued can be refunded until 11:30 p.m. Japan time on the day before the start date, with a ¥560 handling fee. Whether that unissued purchase can be rescheduled without a refund is needs-verify on the reservation site.
