What’s the best way to book Shinkansen seats?

By Echoes, Founder & Editor · Published October 22, 2026

Short answer

For the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen (Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima, Fukuoka), book on smartEX. It is JR’s official service, charges no service fee, shows a seat map, gives you a QR-code ticket and lets you change for free up to 4 minutes before departure. For JR East routes use JR-EAST Train Reservation (eki-net), and for JR West trains use JR West’s online reservation. Third-party sites like Klook are a fallback if your card fails. Station ticket windows charge the regular fare, with no booking fee.

What the official fare should be

Shinkansen fares are fixed; there is no airline-style dynamic pricing on the regular ticket. Tokyo → Kyoto is ¥13,320 non-reserved or ¥13,850 reserved (Hikari/Kodama, regular season). Peak season adds ¥200 (¥400 on the busiest days) for a reserved seat; off-peak subtracts ¥200. Nozomi costs a little more. See Nozomi vs Hikari. If a third-party price is higher than the official fare for the same train and seat type, the difference is their fee.

Do you need to book in advance?

Book ahead during peak periods. smartEX notes that in long-holiday peaks all Nozomi trains on the Tokaido–Sanyo Shinkansen run reserved-seat only. Outside peaks, many travellers buy at the station on the day. Book early if you need oversized-baggage seats or want a family to sit together. The oversized seat is the normal reserved fare; boarding without it can cost ¥1,000. See Shinkansen oversized luggage.

JR Pass or tickets?

If you’re booking individual tickets because the pass doesn’t pay off, you’re probably right: a Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka–Tokyo loop is ¥29,700 in tickets vs ¥50,000 for a 7-day pass. Check with the JR Pass calculator.

FAQ

Common questions

Is smartEX cheaper than Klook?

smartEX is JR’s official service and charges no service fee, so you pay the official fare (or less with early-booking deals). Third-party sellers set their own prices; compare against the official fare for the same train.

Can I book the shinkansen from outside Japan?

Yes. smartEX lets you register and book from your own country, and you board with a QR code on your phone.

Can I change a smartEX booking?

Yes, free of charge, up to 4 minutes before departure.

My card was rejected. What now?

JR East’s booking site says card issuers sometimes block these transactions: try another card, or buy at a station ticket machine or office. A third-party seller is the last resort.

Is the station ticket price different from online?

No booking fee applies at the station; you pay the regular fare. smartEX can be cheaper with early-booking discounts.
