Japan Rail Pass · Buying channel · 2026

Should I buy the JR Pass on the official site or through Klook or an agency?

Short answer

Buy it on the official JAPAN RAIL PASS Reservation site if you can. For purchases made on or after October 1, 2026, the 7-day ordinary adult pass costs ¥50,000 online but ¥53,000 as an Exchange Order from an overseas agency, and the online channel also lets you reserve Shinkansen seats before you land. JR says the lower online price is held only “for a limited time”, with no end date announced.

The change applies by purchase date (local time where you buy), not by travel date. A pass bought before October 1 keeps the price on its Exchange Order. Agency prices are set in yen and converted into local currency at the bank selling rate when the Exchange Order is issued. Resellers can also add their own fees, so compare the final total in yen.

Both channels need the same eligibility: you collect the pass with a passport showing “Temporary Visitor” status. The online service is not available to Japanese nationals living abroad.

When an agency still makes sense

  • Your credit card is rejected by the official site, or you need to pay through a travel company (corporate or package bookings).
  • You want help in person: JR lists JTB, Nippon Travel Agency, Kintetsu International, Tobu Top Tours, JAL, JALPAK and others as designated sellers.
  • The ¥3,000 premium per adult is smaller than your card’s foreign-transaction cost. Do the maths in yen before deciding.

First check whether you need a JR Pass at all

For most Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka trips the pass loses on either channel. A Tokyo → Kyoto → Osaka → Tokyo round trip is ¥29,700 in individual Hikari reserved tickets, against ¥50,000 online or ¥53,000 from an agency. Use the JR Pass calculator or the Japan Route Cost Planner with your own stops, and see the 2026 price-change timeline.

FAQ

Common questions

Is the JR Pass cheaper on the official website than on Klook?

Yes, for purchases from October 1, 2026. The official online price is ¥50,000 for a 7-day adult pass. Overseas agency Exchange Orders are priced at ¥53,000, and resellers can add their own fees.

How long will the official ¥50,000 price last?

JR has not said. The April 9, 2026 JR Group notice says online prices stay unchanged “for a limited time” and that the end date will be announced when decided.

I bought an Exchange Order before October 1, 2026. Do I pay the difference?

No. The new prices apply to purchases made on or after October 1, 2026. The price on your Exchange Order applies, but you must exchange it within 3 months of its issue date.

Can I reserve seats before arriving in Japan?

Only if you buy on the official JAPAN RAIL PASS Reservation site. With an agency Exchange Order you reserve seats after exchanging it for the pass in Japan.

Does the price change affect children?

Yes. The 7-day child pass is ¥25,000 online and ¥27,000 from overseas agencies. A child is 6–11; an 11-year-old at purchase or issue date still counts as a child even if 12 at the time of use.
