When does Shinkansen luggage cost ¥1,000?
By Echoes, Founder & Editor · Published October 23, 2026
Add length + width + height. 160 cm or under: rack, feet or deck storage, no special seat. Over 160 cm and up to 250 cm on the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen: reserve a seat with an oversized baggage area. That seat is the normal reserved-seat price, not a surcharge. Without the reservation, the fee is ¥1,000 including tax. Over 250 cm stays off the train. A JR Pass does not, on JR Central’s page, cancel the ¥1,000.
Checked October 23, 2026 on JR Central and smartEX. Hokuriku and other Shinkansen lines are needs-verify.The size rule, in one table
| Total of three sides | Where it goes | What you pay |
|---|---|---|
| 160 cm or less | Overhead rack, footwell, or the deck storage area. A large suitcase in this band can use the deck without a reservation. | No oversized-baggage fee. A non-reserved seat is still allowed. Racks are about 42 cm deep, so a 30 × 50 × 80 cm bag is the example JR gives. |
| 161–250 cm | The space behind the last-row seats marked for oversized baggage. The space is shared by the passengers who reserved those seats. | Reserve it with the ticket. The ticket price is the same as an ordinary or Green reserved seat. No reservation: ¥1,000 including tax, and you may be refused if there is no space. |
| Over 250 cm | Not on the train. | JR Central says it cannot be brought on board. Send it ahead. The delivery price is needs-verify with the company you use. |
| Stroller, instrument or sports gear up to 250 cm | Rack or deck storage. The last-row oversized space is still for people who reserved it. | JR Central’s summary says a reservation is not required. Reserve only if you need that last-row space. |
Measure the case, including wheels and handles. A “cabin size” bag is usually under the line. A 80 + 55 + 35 cm checked case is 170 cm and is oversized. Exactly 160 cm is in the no-reservation band. The English page says both “more than 160 cm” and “between 161 and 250 cm.” Use the stricter reading: if you are on the line, reserve.
The English page names Tokyo–Shin-Osaka–Hakata–Kagoshima-Chuo. A Japanese JR Central notice also names the West Kyushu Shinkansen. If your train is the Hokuriku Shinkansen or another JR company, the same fee is needs-verify. Do not copy ¥1,000 onto a line the page does not list.
The ¥1,000 is the penalty, not the seat
Travelers add ¥1,000 in their heads to every Tokyo–Kyoto ticket “because of the suitcase.” That is the wrong number. JR Central says the oversized-baggage seat costs the same as a normal reserved seat in an ordinary car or a Green Car. The ¥1,000 is charged when the bag comes aboard without that reservation.
On a regular-season Hikari or Kodama, the reserved Tokyo → Kyoto ticket TripWorth already publishes is ¥13,850, against ¥13,320 non-reserved. The gap is the reserved seat, about ¥530, not ¥1,000 on top of ¥13,850. See Tokyo to Kyoto and Tokyo to Osaka. Peak and off-peak reserved adjustments are a separate ±¥200 rule, not a luggage fee.
If every oversized seat on your train is gone, you do not get to board and pay ¥1,000 as a plan. JR tells you to reserve ahead. A fee after the fact still depends on the crew having somewhere to put the bag. Book another departure if the seat map has no oversized seats left.
How to reserve it, including with a JR Pass
- Say the words at the counter, or tick the box online. “Seat with an oversized baggage area.” smartEX, JR-WEST ONLINE TRAIN RESERVATION and JR-KYUSHU Train Reservation are the online names JR Central lists. Station machines can do it too. See where to book and the booking and boarding steps.
- The whole trip needs that seat. smartEX says a connection must be reserved as oversized seats for the entire journey. A non-reserved car cannot be used for that trip. You also cannot mix an oversized seat and an ordinary reserved seat in one booking operation; split them.
- Group limit: up to five people in one ordinary-car booking, or four in a Green Car, and you cannot cross car numbers in that one operation. Some trains allow fewer. Split the booking.
- Timing: smartEX says this seat is not in the after-hours or advance-request queue. Reserve when tickets go on sale, one month before departure. Holiday weeks sell the last-row seats first.
- JR Pass: at a ticket office, tell the clerk you want the oversized seat. Online, JR Central points pass holders to JAPAN RAIL PASS Reservation. The pass covers an eligible reserved seat. It does not, on that page, waive the ¥1,000 if you skip the reservation. Nozomi still needs its own extra ticket even if the luggage seat is free of a luggage surcharge. See Shinkansen and the JR Pass and Nozomi vs Hikari.
Some seat products have no oversized area at all. The Japanese smartEX note says S Work seats and certain family cars are not set up for it. If the seat map will not show the oversized option, that train cannot take the bag. Pick another car or another departure.
When the fee is the wrong thing to worry about
A suitcase at 158 cm does not need the ¥1,000 conversation. It needs a rack that can hold it and a seat you can reach with it. Forwarding the bag hotel-to-hotel is JR Central’s “hands-free” suggestion for anything you do not want on the train. The price of that delivery is needs-verify; the Shinkansen page only says it is a paid service, with a size cap of 200 cm total for that service in the summary table.
If the pass math was already close, one reserved seat does not flip whether the JR Pass is worth it. The luggage rule changes the seat you book, not the pass price. Start the pass on the Shinkansen day, not at the airport, using the start-date guide, and book the oversized seat for that same train before you leave home.
FAQ
Common questions
How much is the Shinkansen oversized luggage fee?
¥1,000 including tax, if you bring baggage over 160 cm and up to 250 cm onto the Tokaido, Sanyo or Kyushu Shinkansen without a reserved seat that has an oversized baggage area. The reserved seat itself is the normal reserved-seat price, not an extra ¥1,000.
What size counts as oversized?
Add length, width and height. 160 cm or less can use the rack, the footwell or deck storage without an oversized-seat reservation. Between 161 and 250 cm requires that reservation on the named Shinkansen. Over 250 cm cannot be brought on board.
Does a JR Pass waive the ¥1,000?
JR Central tells JR Pass holders to reserve a seat with an oversized baggage area. The published page does not list a pass exemption from the ¥1,000 fee for boarding without that reservation.
Can I use a non-reserved car with a large suitcase?
Not when the bag is over 160 cm. smartEX says an oversized-baggage seat has to be reserved for the whole trip, and a non-reserved seat cannot be used for that trip. A bag at 160 cm or under does not need that seat.
Does the same rule apply to every Shinkansen?
JR Central’s English page names the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen from Tokyo to Shin-Osaka, Hakata and Kagoshima-Chuo. A Japanese notice also names the West Kyushu Shinkansen. Hokuriku and other Shinkansen lines are needs-verify against that operator.
