Is the Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass worth it?

By Echoes, Founder & Editor · Published October 27, 2026

Short answer

Often yes if you are based in Kansai and ride the Sanyo Shinkansen to Hiroshima and back inside 5 consecutive days. The adult pass is ¥17,000 (child ¥8,500). A regular-season reserved Shin-Osaka–Hiroshima round trip is ¥20,840 in TripWorth’s fare set, so the pass costs ¥3,840 less before the included JR West Miyajima Ferry. Skip it for a one-way ride toward Hakata, or for Tokyo–Shin-Osaka travel: those Shinkansen sections are excluded. A 7-day nationwide JR Pass (¥50,000 online) is the wrong product when the long rides stay inside this map.

Pass rules opened October 27, 2026 on JR West. Single-ticket samples use TripWorth’s October 13, 2026 regular-season fare set and are illustrative. Confirm the seat you want on SmartEX.

When it pays, and when it does not

The pass is a 5-day JR West product for visitors. It is worth comparing only with rides the map actually covers.

The pass can cost less

You fly into Kansai (or you are already there) and take a Hiroshima return inside the same 5 days. One reserved Shin-Osaka–Hiroshima round trip is already above ¥17,000. HARUKA, KUROSHIO, and other covered limited expresses, plus local and rapid JR West trains, add value only if you would have paid those fares anyway. The JR West Miyajima Ferry is included.

Individual tickets can cost less

You ride the Sanyo Shinkansen only one way, then continue past Hiroshima. Hiroshima–Hakata is not covered. A through ticket to Hakata is cheaper than the pass plus a leftover ticket. Kansai-only days with no Hiroshima Shinkansen also sit well below ¥17,000. The narrower Kansai Area Pass is no longer on sale.

Look at the nationwide JR Pass instead

Your expensive rides include Tokyo–Shin-Osaka, Hiroshima–Hakata, or the Kyushu Shinkansen. This pass covers none of those. Put the whole list into the JR Pass calculator. For the Tokyo–Kyoto leg alone, start with the Tokyo to Kyoto train guide.

RuleWhat JR West states
Price5-day adult ¥17,000; child (6–11) ¥8,500. Prices are subject to change. The page says displayed information, including prices, was current as of August 1, 2024.
Validity5 consecutive days, 00:00 on the start day through 24:00 on the last day (Japan time). Unlimited rides inside the mapped area.
Covered trainsSanyo Shinkansen reserved seats between Shin-Osaka and Hiroshima, and ordinary non-reserved seats except on trains that have no non-reserved cars. Reserved seats on limited expresses such as HARUKA, KUROSHIO, KONOTORI, and KINOSAKI. Special rapid, rapid, and local trains on JR West conventional lines. Reserve a reserved seat before boarding. Green cars need a separate Green ticket. Sleepers cannot be used. A-Seat paid seating needs a separate charge.
MiyajimaJR West Miyajima Ferry only (Miyajimaguchi–Miyajima). A visitation tax of ¥100 is charged on boarding (JR West’s note, as of October 2023). Other boats are outside the pass.
Not coveredSanyo Shinkansen Hiroshima–Hakata. Tokaido Shinkansen Shin-Osaka–Tokyo. Kyushu Shinkansen Hakata–Kagoshima-Chuo. Expressway buses. Non-JR transport, including Osaka Metro and private railways, is outside this JR West pass.
Who can buy itA passport issued by a foreign government, and entry as a Temporary Visitor (短期滞在). The page also says in Japanese that Japanese nationals cannot use it, including holders of permanent residence abroad. You need your passport to receive the pass.

The same JR West page also lists a separate Have Fun in Hiroshima Pass at ¥17,500. That is a different product. Do not mix the two prices.

JR West’s valid-train list does not add a Nozomi or Mizuho exclusion on Shin-Osaka–Hiroshima. The nationwide JR Pass does exclude those trains unless the holder buys a separate ticket. Check the exact train before you treat a Nozomi seat as included.

Sample: Osaka or Kyoto base, Hiroshima day trip, Miyajima ferry

One adult, regular season. Shinkansen figures are TripWorth’s window Hikari/Kodama ordinary fares (official non-reserved fare plus ¥530 for a reserved seat), checked October 13, 2026. They are not a live quote.

Hiroshima return from Shin-Osaka versus the 5-day pass
ItemIllustrative fare
Shin-Osaka → Hiroshima, reserved¥10,420
Hiroshima → Shin-Osaka, reserved¥10,420
Reserved round trip¥20,840
Same round trip, non-reserved¥19,780 (¥9,890 each way)
5-day Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass¥17,000
JR West Miyajima FerryIncluded. Cash fare not re-checked. ¥100 visitation tax is extra.
7-day JR Pass, official online / overseas agency¥50,000 / ¥53,000

The reserved round trip alone is ¥3,840 above the pass. The non-reserved round trip is still ¥2,780 above it. Peak season in this fare set adds ¥200 per reserved ride, or ¥400 on the busiest days, so two reserved rides add at most ¥800. That does not close a ¥3,840 gap. Off-peak subtracts ¥200 per reserved ride.

From Kyoto, a through Shinkansen ticket to Hiroshima is ¥11,300 reserved one way (¥22,600 return; non-reserved return ¥21,540). Kyoto–Shin-Osaka is the Tokaido Shinkansen, which this pass does not cover. Use a covered conventional JR train between Kyoto and Shin-Osaka, then a Sanyo Shinkansen train. The pass can still replace that through-ticket return, with a change at Shin-Osaka. The ¥11,300 figure is the single ticket you would otherwise buy, not a second charge on top of the pass.

If those Hiroshima seats are your only long JR rides, the nationwide pass costs ¥33,000 more than this regional pass (¥50,000 versus ¥17,000) and covers trains you are not taking. Compare the full list on Is the JR Pass worth it? and the Hiroshima loop page Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and Hiroshima.

Sample: several Kansai days plus Hiroshima, versus a Kansai-only pass

The Kansai Area Pass never covered any Shinkansen. JR West’s page for it, opened October 27, 2026, says sales ended on September 30, 2026. Passes bought by that date stay valid for their own period. It is not a current way to buy Kansai rides.

Why a Hiroshima return was already more than stacking the old Kansai pass
StackIllustrative adult total
Kansai Area Pass, 4-day (no longer on sale)¥7,000
Plus a reserved Shin-Osaka–Hiroshima round trip¥20,840
Combined¥27,840
Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass, 5-day¥17,000

That old stack is ¥10,840 more than the Hiroshima pass, and it lasts 4 days rather than 5. The prices JR West still prints for the discontinued pass are ¥2,800, ¥4,800, ¥5,800, and ¥7,000 for 1–4 adult days. Use them only to see the shape of the choice. Do not plan on buying one.

If you are not going to Hiroshima, do not step up to ¥17,000 for local Kansai JR. The Kansai WIDE Area Pass is a different 5-day product, still listed at ¥12,000 adult / ¥6,000 child. Its Sanyo section is Shin-Osaka–Okayama only. Okayama–Hakata, including Hiroshima, is excluded. Compare that pass, or ordinary tickets, on the JR West page before you pay for Hiroshima coverage you will not use. The older Kansai Area Pass vs JR Pass page describes the discontinued regional pass and the nationwide pass; read the sales-ended note above before you use it as a buying guide.

Sample: Tokyo on the itinerary, or a continuation to Hakata

Same fare set. Tokyo–Shin-Osaka is ¥14,400 each way. The pass does not cover it, so those tickets stay in the total either way.

Tokyo tickets plus a Hiroshima return from Kansai

Separate Tokaido tickets plus a Hiroshima round trip
Way to payIllustrative total
Tokyo ↔ Shin-Osaka (¥14,400 × 2) plus Hiroshima reserved return (¥20,840)¥49,640
Tokyo ↔ Shin-Osaka plus the 5-day pass¥45,800
7-day JR Pass, online / agency¥50,000 / ¥53,000

The pass stack is ¥3,840 less than the tickets and ¥4,200 less than the online nationwide pass. The Tokyo rides can fall outside the 5 pass days, because they are separate tickets. The nationwide pass only catches up if other covered JR travel outside this map, inside 7 consecutive days, closes that gap. Check that list in the JR Pass calculator.

One loop back to Tokyo from Hiroshima, without a separate return

TripWorth’s published loop is Tokyo → Kyoto ¥13,850, Kyoto → Shin-Osaka ¥1,450 (non-reserved Shinkansen), Shin-Osaka → Hiroshima ¥10,420, Hiroshima → Tokyo ¥18,910. The total is ¥44,630. Splitting the ride home so the pass covers Hiroshima–Shin-Osaka, then buying Shin-Osaka → Tokyo at ¥14,400, produces ¥13,850 + ¥17,000 + ¥14,400 = ¥45,250. That is ¥620 more than the through tickets, and you change at Shin-Osaka. The 7-day pass at ¥50,000 is still higher than the tickets. This loop does not justify either pass. The worked version is on Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and Hiroshima.

Continuing west of Hiroshima

Shin-Osaka to Hakata, one way
Way to payIllustrative total
Through ticket, Shin-Osaka → Hakata¥15,280
Pass (covers only to Hiroshima) plus Hiroshima → Hakata¥17,000 + ¥9,100 = ¥26,100

The pass path costs ¥10,820 more than the through ticket. You would need other covered rides above that gap before the pass could win, which a one-way departure usually does not have. A longer Tokyo–Hakata trip can favor the nationwide pass; this regional pass still leaves both the Tokaido and the Hiroshima–Hakata sections unpaid. See Tokyo to Kyoto: Shinkansen vs JR Pass for the east end of that trip, and Tokyo to Hiroshima for the through-ticket shape.

What this page cannot confirm

  • Live SmartEX or ticket-window prices. The samples above are regular-season ordinary fares from TripWorth’s October 13, 2026 set. Seat type, date, and route can change the yen amount. Check SmartEX or the station before you pay. The method is on how TripWorth checks fares.
  • The cash fare of the JR West Miyajima Ferry. JR West includes that ferry in the pass. The ¥100 visitation tax is the operator’s own note, dated October 2023, not a 2026 re-check.
  • HARUKA, KUROSHIO, and local Kansai fares for a specific day. They are covered when the train is inside the pass rules. They are not added into the sample totals, because this page did not re-price them.
  • Whether the train you want is reserved-only. Non-reserved seats are not available on those trains, and a reserved seat has to be booked before boarding.
  • Child single-ticket totals. The child pass is half the adult price (¥8,500). Ages 6–11 are also about half on the Shinkansen in TripWorth’s child fare guide, so the adult gap is a fair first look, not a family quote.

FAQ

Common questions

How much is the Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass?

JR West lists one duration: 5 consecutive days, ¥17,000 for an adult and ¥8,500 for a child (ages 6–11). The official page says prices are subject to change. When opened on October 27, 2026, the table still showed those figures, and the page said displayed information was current as of August 1, 2024.

Does the Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass cover Hiroshima and Miyajima?

It covers unlimited rides inside the mapped JR West area, including reserved and ordinary non-reserved seats on the Sanyo Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Hiroshima, and the JR West Miyajima Ferry between Miyajimaguchi and Miyajima. A ¥100 Miyajima visitation tax is extra (JR West’s note, as of October 2023). The pass does not cover Sanyo Shinkansen trains from Hiroshima to Hakata.

Does it cover the train from Tokyo or to Fukuoka?

No. JR West excludes the Tokaido Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Tokyo, the Sanyo Shinkansen between Hiroshima and Hakata, and the Kyushu Shinkansen. Buy those tickets separately or compare a nationwide JR Pass.

Is it worth it versus individual tickets and the JR Pass?

A reserved Shin-Osaka–Hiroshima round trip is ¥20,840 in TripWorth’s regular-season fare set, against ¥17,000 for the pass, so one return can cost less before the ferry. The same round trip plus separate Tokyo–Shin-Osaka tickets is still below a 7-day nationwide pass. A one-way trip that continues to Hakata is usually cheaper as a through ticket. These are illustrative totals; confirm live fares on SmartEX.

Who can buy the Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass?

JR West requires a passport issued by a foreign government and entry to Japan as a Temporary Visitor (短期滞在). The same page says in Japanese that Japanese nationals cannot use it, including people with permanent residence outside Japan.
